Chia is a bright green, bushy plant with blue flowers. Both leaf and seed can be made into stimulating beverage. Seeds are extremely nutritious being a high protein, high energy food with enzyme action (catalyst aiding food digestion). Regulates sugar metabolism. One tablespoon of seed is sufficient to sustain a person doing hard labour for 24 hours. A thirst quencher and survival food. Seed stores well and can be sprouted. Chia is native to south eastern Arizona through to South America and is adaptable to most well drained soils but prefers a protected, sunny position. Frost tender but drought resistant. Annual or biennial, depending on climate, growing to 1.2m x 0.4m. Sow in spring
