Description
Ceylon Salad Leaf, Basella alba, is one of our most useful greens. This vigourous and hardy plant produces dense textured red coloured leaves that are both nutritious (rich in mucin) and tasty. Enjoy raw or cooked. May be grown on a trellis or as a ground cover. Ideal vegetable for patio gardens. Native to Ceylon, it prefers moist well-drained soils in a protected part-shaded position. Drought and frost tender. A perennial in warmer climates, growing to 1.5m x 0.3m.
