Manuka, or Tea Tree, has the botanical name Leptospermum scoparium. This is a must have for backyard bee-keepers as the honey produced from the flowers of Manuka is reputed to be the most healing of all honey. Naturally occurring in South Eastern Australia and New Zealand. Named Tea Tree by Captain Cook as the tea made from the leaves was an acceptable beverage. Traditional Maori remedy for kidney and liver complaints and to treat the symptoms of a cold.
An attractive shrub makes a good hedging plant or sight screen. Suitable to grow from full sun to heavy shade. Spreading, evergreen shrub to 5m x 2m, but can be pruned to 2m x 2m. Good drainage required. Attractive white or pink flowers. Frost and drought tolerant. Requires acid soils.
