White Turmeric plant, Curcuma zedoaria, is sometimes known as Zedoary, Sand Ginger, Kenchur and White Galangal. A rare and ancient spice of India. Aromatic and pungent the root is used in Asian cooking and is one of the ingredients in Swedish Bitters. The root yields a starch known as shoti, which is highly nutritious and easily metabolised. Used as a food for invalids and sick infants. Similar medicinal properties as Turmeric, a close relative. White Turmeric plant is native to southern Asia and prefers well composted. moist, well drained soils in a protected, part-shaded position. Frost resistant but drought tender. An herbaceous perennial.
