Description
Carob plant, Ceratonia siliqua, is also known as Chocolate Tree. Source of the well-known chocolate substitute. The seed pods are rich protein and calcium. Used fresh (similar flavour to dates) or roasted and ground into a powder as a chocolate substitute for flavouring drinks, cakes etc. Trees make an excellent windbreak, and provide animal and bee fodder. Legume tree (leaves can be pruned). Carob plant is a native of Syria. Prefers well-drained alkaline soils in an open, sunny position. Drought and frost tender. An evergreen tree, growing to 10m x 4m.
