Gentian, Gentiana lutea, is also known as Yellow Gentian. Regarded as the purest of all bitter agents, Gentian is best known as an ingredient is Swedish Bitters. The root is the source of the official bitter tonic, while the foliage is succulent with rich yellow flowers. Gentian is native to central and southern Europe and Asia minor and prefers partial shade in moist, fertile and shallow soil. An herbaceous perennial, flowering to 1.2m
