Description

Tamarillo plant, Solanum betaceum, is also known as Tree Tomato. A fast-growing evergreen shrub that produces tangy succulent fruit with an edible pulp. Fruit is red or yellow in colour and shaped like an egg. Fragrant pink flowers in spring with fruit in autumn. Prefers full sun, and performs well in a warm position. Fast growing, achieving about 5m at maturity – prune for bushy growth, to maintain shape and reduce size for container cultivation. Tolerates a wide range of soils with good drainage. Mulch well are roots are sensitive to drying out. Frost sensitive.
