Vanilla Plant

The Vanilla Plant brings one of the world’s most treasured flavours into the garden, as this remarkable tropical orchid has an ancient story. Its history also adds to the allure of growing it at home.

Officially named Vanilla planifolia, this evergreen perennial develops into a fleshy climbing vine with thick, glossy leaves. Aerial roots also help it cling to trees, trellises, and other sturdy supports. Under ideal tropical conditions, mature vines may reach approximately 15 metres.

Common names include Vanilla, Vanilla Plant, Vanilla Orchid, Vanilla Bean Orchid, Flat-leaved Vanilla, Flat-leaved Vanilla Orchid, Commercial Vanilla, Bourbon Vanilla, Madagascar Vanilla, Mexican Vanilla and West Indian Vanilla. Several of these names also reflect regions closely associated with vanilla cultivation and the international spice trade.

Mature vines produce elegant clusters of yellow-green orchid flowers. Moreover, each delicate bloom opens only briefly, making flowering a memorable event for any collector.

Native to southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America, vanilla has captivated people in Mexico for centuries. However, its famous fragrance comes from the elongated fruit, not the flower.

After successful pollination, the pods develop slowly over many months. Growers then harvest and carefully cure them to develop their characteristic sweet, complex aroma. Outside the vine’s native habitat, gardeners usually need to hand-pollinate each flower to produce pods.

Prepared vanilla pods flavour ice cream, cakes, custards, chocolate and beverages. Perfumers also prize their fragrance, and cured pods make an exquisite addition to potpourri. The Vanilla Plant therefore gives collectors the unusual opportunity to grow an edible crop produced by an orchid.

First, choose a warm, humid, protected spot with bright, filtered light or gentle morning sun. Then, use rich, well-composted, free-draining growing media. Keep the roots regularly moist but never waterlogged.

Give the vine strong climbing support and shelter it from drying winds. Because this frost-tender orchid thrives in tropical and subtropical parts of Australia, coastal gardeners may grow it outdoors in a suitable microclimate. In contrast, southern and inland growers will generally need a heated greenhouse or reliable winter protection.

Its preferred conditions resemble those of our Ylang Ylang Plant, Tea Plant, and Coffee Plant. Collectively, they create a fascinating collection of tropical plants behind some of the world’s most cherished flavours and fragrances.
